Overview

What NMN is

Nicotinamide mononucleotide is a naturally occurring nucleotide and the immediate precursor of NAD⁺, the coenzyme at the centre of cellular energy metabolism. As a bulk ingredient it goes into capsules, powder sticks and functional beverages, where formulators need a consistent assay more than a marketing story.

The commercial question is rarely “is it NMN” — it is which NMN. Three things separate one lot from another: the proportion that is the physiologically relevant β-anomer, the related-substance profile (NAD⁺, NR, nicotinamide), and the water content of a material that is mildly hygroscopic. Our specification names all three, and each is reported on the certificate of analysis rather than averaged into a single purity figure.

Eastling supplies NMN as a white to off-white crystalline powder, assay ≥99% by HPLC, from 1 g for evaluation through to multi-kilogram commercial lots. The manufacturing route and country of origin are stated on the specification sheet — ask for them before your first order if your market needs a non-GMO or origin declaration.

  • Assay ≥ 99% by HPLC, with chromatogram and related substances per batch
  • β-anomer content reported, not assumed
  • Water content by Karl Fischer — the number that predicts shelf behaviour
  • From 1 g evaluation samples to multi-kilogram lots

Manufacture

How it is made.

Four stages separate the raw material from the lot you receive. Each one leaves a test result on the batch record.

  1. 01

    Biocatalytic conversion

Nicotinamide is converted to NMN enzymatically, which avoids the isomer mixture and solvent residues of a purely chemical route.

  2. 02

    Chromatographic purification

Ion-exchange removes NAD⁺, NR and unreacted nicotinamide — the three related substances that a purity figure alone will not show.

  3. 03

    Crystallisation and drying

Low-temperature crystallisation, then vacuum drying. This is the stage that sets the water content your shelf life depends on.

  4. 04

    Release testing

Assay, related substances, β-anomer, water, heavy metals and microbiological limits are tested against the written specification before release.

Applications

Where it is used.

NMN is a formulation ingredient, not a finished product. These are the three formats we are asked about most.

01

Capsules & tablets

Direct compression or capsule filling, usually at 125–500 mg per dose. A milled grade can be quoted if flow properties matter more than particle size distribution.

02

Powder sticks & sachets

Single-serve dry blends, where hygroscopicity — not assay — decides whether the product survives twelve months on a shelf.

03

Functional beverages

RTD and powder mixes. NMN hydrolyses in aqueous solution; confirm stability in your matrix and at your pH before scale-up.

Specification

Release criteria.

The written limits we release against, with the method used to test each one. Batch results for the lot you receive are stated on its certificate of analysis.

Certificate

Reading the certificate.

Three numbers on this material are routinely misread. If a supplier cannot produce them, the “99%” on the label is doing very little work.

01

Purity is not assay

HPLC purity is the area percentage of the main peak. Assay is how much NMN is actually in the weighed powder, against a reference standard. A lot can be 99.5% pure by area and still be 92% NMN by mass once water and counter-ions are counted.

02

Ask for the β-anomer

Only the β-anomer is the physiological precursor. Total NMN can look perfect while the α-anomer sits in the impurity profile. Our COA states β-anomer content separately.

03

Water is the leading indicator

NMN is hygroscopic. A water figure drifting above specification usually means the material has been opened, repacked, or dried inadequately — and degradation follows.

Documentation & packaging

What ships with it.

The paperwork travels with the goods. If your QA team needs an extra declaration, ask before the order is released — some are issued per production lot and cannot be retrofitted.

01

Certificate of analysis

Batch number, assay, β-anomer, related substances, water, heavy metals and microbiological results — one page, one lot.

Questions

Before you order.

The questions buyers actually ask about NMN. Anything not covered here, ask directly — you will get an answer from someone technical, not a template.

NMN or NR — which should I formulate with?
Both are NAD⁺ precursors. NMN sits one step closer in the salvage pathway; NR is generally more stable in aqueous formats and has a longer regulatory track record in some markets. The deciding factor is usually your dosage form and your target market's novel-food rules, not the biochemistry. Tell us the format and we will say what we would choose — and what we would not.
Does the COA report the β-anomer?
Yes, as a separate line. α-NMN is a synthesis by-product; if a supplier only quotes “NMN ≥99%”, the anomer split is unknown. We also report NAD⁺, NR and nicotinamide individually.
Is NMN stable in a beverage?
Not indefinitely. NMN hydrolyses in water, and the rate rises with temperature and pH. Powder sticks are the low-risk format; for RTD products, treat stability as a formulation project with your own accelerated data, not as a property of the raw material.
What is the difference between food grade and a “pharma grade”?
For NMN there is no pharmacopoeia monograph, so “pharma grade” has no agreed definition. What exists is a specification: assay, related substances, residual solvents, heavy metals, microbial limits and a documented route. We supply against a written specification and will send it before you order so your QA team can compare it line by line.
What is the regulatory status in my market?
It differs, and it is the importer's responsibility. NMN is sold as a dietary supplement in the United States; in the EU it is treated as a novel food and requires authorisation before sale; other markets have their own lists. We supply the ingredient and the documentation — we do not advise on market access, and we will not describe the material as approved anywhere it is not.
What is the minimum order and lead time?
Samples start at 1 g. Commercial quantities are usually quoted at 2–3 weeks, confirmed in writing once the specification and destination are agreed. Stock lots ship faster — ask when you enquire.
Can you supply pre-weighed sachets or a milled grade?
Both are quotable. Milling changes flow and bulk density, so send the target particle size and your filling equipment; sachets need the fill weight and the film specification. Neither changes the release specification.
How is it shipped and how should it be stored?
Ambient or cold-chain depending on destination and transit time, with desiccant in every pack. Store sealed at −20 °C, protected from light. Let the container reach room temperature before opening — condensation on cold powder is the most common cause of a good lot going bad.
